Black and White in a Quilt
This quilt was inspired by the amazing Yarnstorm. I love her quilts, they're so exuberant, joyful, and inviting. I always want to squeal when she posts a new one. You know the sort, a really girly "EEEEEEeeeeeeee....." because you just can't stand it.
Anyway, I finished this almost exactly a year ago. While it was still on my design wall I took a photo and emailed it to a friend who fell in love with it, so I finished it for her. She wanted to pay me for the materials and quilting because I had already made her a baby quilt, so I said O.K. and was totally shocked when it added up to a little over $100.
I probably had 5 fat quarters of b&w fabric in my stash when I put this together, now I have a whole stack. It wasn't a combination that appealed to me until that instant and now I'd like to make more quilts incorporating b&w. It seems like more manufacturers are producing b&w lines, so that's a nice coincidence. Plus I read somewhere that it's the mark of a master quilt colorist. Who wouldn't like that title?
One other tidbit. The gray fabric with speckles was given to me by my grandmother before she died, and it's the wrong side of the fabric. I think she had two pieces of gray in her stash and I asked about this one because it was so bright and outside her preferred palette. She said she always used it wrong side up, then she gave it to me. She did that a lot. It was very satisfying to use it in a quilt that was a huge leap forward in my color skills that was then sent to a dear friend. I think Kathryn would like what I've done with it.

lovely. do you quilt by hand or machine?

My quilts are all quilted by machine, and in the last few years I've sent them all out to a long arm quilter. I've done a tiny bit of hand quilting but I'm just not fast enough to keep up with all the quilts in my head waiting to be made.
I do love the look of hand quilting.
